"If you know someone who has lost a child or anybody who's important to them, and you're afraid to mention them because you think you might make them sad by reminding them that they died, they didn't forget they died. You're not reminding them. What you're reminding them of is that you remembered that they lived, and that's a great, great gift" - Elizabeth Edwards

"The deep hurt is the mirror image of the deep joy that still awaits you." - Bruce C. Hafen

Happy Halloween!

We had a nice day. In the morning we got to go and listen to Nicci sing with her friends at preschool They were so cute. Nicci was so excited to be dressed up.

We had Corey and Jenn and their kids over for some pizza and then we went to our ward trunk or treat. The kids got a lot of candy!

The kids and their cousins

I love the how puffy Lionel’s costume is.

Our pumpkins…

Spider cookies we made with the kids.

Hand Surgery Tomorrow…

So…I am pretty embarrassed to admit that I cut myself when we carved pumpkins last night. The knife got very slippery and I cut my right little finger pretty deep. This happened on Sunday around 4pm. So we went to the emergency room. They asked me to try to bend my finger…when I did, something popped inside my finger and it started to hurt a lot.. Things in the emergency room took forever…3 hours later we were home again…This time with my right hand in a splint. I cut through the tendon in my finger…so I can’t bend it all the way…Tomorrow I am going to have surgery to fix it and then I have to have a splint on my hand for 6 weeks…I am right handed and of course I cut the finger on my right hand…so I hope the doctor will let me at least have my thumb and index finger outside the splint…We shall see.

On the Night You Were Born

I have been working on a photo book for a couple of days now. It’s going to be filled with pictures of Oliver and poems and quotes that I have collected during our journey with him.  Nancy Tillman wrote a book called, “On the Night You Were born.” One of the poems I put in the photo book come from the words of her book. It’s just beautiful! I know a mom who read this book to her little boy (who also passed away from Potter’s syndrome) while he was still alive and I thought that was such a cute idea. I love the words and I want to get the book and read it for the kids. I can’t read it without getting teary eyed when I think of my sweet Oliver.

“On the night you were born,
The moon smiled with such wonder
That the stars peeked in to see you
And the night wind whispered,
“Life will never be the same.”
Because there had never been anyone like you…ever in the world.
So enchanted with you were the wind and the rain
That they whispered the sound of your wonderful name.
It sailed through the farmland
High on the breeze…
Over the ocean…
And through the trees…
Until everyone heard it
And everyone knew
Of the one and only ever you.
Not once had there been such eyes,
Such a nose,
Such silly, wiggly, wonderful toes.
When the polar bears heard,
They danced until dawn.
From faraway places,
The geese flew home.
The moon stayed up until
Morning next day.
And none of the ladybugs flew away.
So whenever you doubt just how special you are
And you wonder who loves you, how much and how far,
Listen for geese honking high in the sky.
(They’re singing a song to remember you by.)
Or notice the bears asleep at the zoo.
(It’s because they’ve been dancing all night for you!)
Or drift off to sleep to the sound of the wind.
(Listen closely…it’s whispering your name again!)
If the moon stays up until morning one day,
Or a ladybug lands and decides to stay,
Or a little bird sits at your window awhile,
It’s because they’re all hoping to see you smile…
For never before in story or rhyme
(not even once upon a time)
Has the world ever known a you, my friend,
And it never will, not ever again…
Heaven blew every trumpet
And played every horn
On the wonderful, marvelous
Night you were born.”
